Before I pursued photography seriously, I spent time as a teacher. I got my start with Teach for America. It was a quick, stressful, time in my life. But through it, I met some of the most amazing people. And to this day, those connections keep on giving me LIFE. A old teacher friend of mine introduced me to Kayla and Justin. These two are TFAers like me, who met in Oklahoma and became best friends. If you don't know already, the way to get through 2 years of teaching without knowing what you're doing every day is ... friends.
They're now settled in Tacoma, where Kayla is the Dean of Students at a local school and Justin works in education for the Government. Two smart cookies, if you ask me! But what I loved most about meeting these two, is just how chill and into each other they are.
When I asked Justin how he knew Kayla was "the one", he looked at her quietly and told me, "It just dawned on me one day. Never had I had such an easy time talking with someone. She can be silly and serious all within one conversation." When I asked Kayla the same question about Justin, all she needed to say was, "We are best friends." It's that simple, folks!
Nothing about this wedding could be compared to. We met at a cabin in the woods, the family spent Thanksgiving together the night before, we stood in a circle and the two of them proposed toasts thanking each soul for being a part of their journey. And then we danced, ohhhhh how we danced!
When I think back on this day, I am always going to be reminded of a quote from the movie Frida. I'll paraphrase here, but it goes something like this: "But.. when two people know [how crazy life is about to get], and they decide with eyes wide open to face each other and get married anyway, then I don't think it's conservative or delusional. I think it's radical and courageous and very romantic."
Here's to you, Kayla and Justin! May your friendship only get stronger as the years go by!
This wins for my "Most Intimate" Wedding award. Thanks so much for letting me me a part of it, Kayla and Justin!
